Things to do: Irmo Edition

Since the bulk of our festivities will take place in the greater Irmo area, below are some suggestions for shopping, dining, and recreation within 5 minutes of the hotel.

Shopping: Harbison Boulevard has a mall, Columbiana Centre, containing major retail stores and is a great place to do some last-minute shopping for accessories or shoes! For unique South Carolina gear, Palmetto Traditions has all the SC-logoed gear you can imagine.  If you’d like some Garnet & Black Traditions plays host to South Carolina Gamecock paraphanelia within the same store located on Bower Parkway. BEWARE of the Tiger Paw Traditions–you will be blinded with orange, which is no way to spend a wedding weekend.  There are also other major shopping destinations up and down Harbison Boulevard for you to explore.

Recreation: Frankie’s Fun Park, less than 5 minutes from the hotel, offers you a throwback to your younger years with go karts, putt-putt, and arcade games for a few hours.  Ripped straight from their website, Saluda Shoals Park is a premier, natural, environmentally sensitive riverfront park that invites visitors to experience the treasures of the Saluda River through exceptional educational, recreational and cultural opportunities.  There are paved and unpaved trails along the lower Saluda River for you to enjoy for a morning hike.

Wine & Dine: There are numerous national chain restaurants, including Macaroni Grill, Outback, Chipotle, and Panera Bread.  If you’re looking for a Columbia staple, Miyo’s has some of Columbia’s best Chinese food and sushi.  A couple of doors down you’ll find British Bulldog Pub, offering traditional British pub fare and live music.

Things to do: Columbia Edition

With South Carolina’s Capital City just a few miles away, it’s an easy trip down I-26 to experience what the Soda City is all about.  We’ve broken it down into Sights & Sounds of the city followed by 2 popular entertainment districts featuring restaurants & shopping options.

Sights & Sounds:

Riverbanks Zoo: Riverbanks Zoo & Garden is home to more than 2,000 magnificent and fascinating animals and one of the nation’s most beautiful and inspiring botanical gardens.

EdVenture Children’s Museum: The South’s largest children’s museum is the home of Eddie, the world’s largest child, along with 300 exhibits to inspire children to experience the joy of learning. Where else but EdVenture can children talk to a skeleton, drive a real fire truck, anchor the news or visit another country.

Columbia Museum of Art: The Columbia Museum of Art is South Carolina’s premier international art museum with extraordinary collections of European and American fine and decorative art that span centuries. Founded in 1950, the museum opened its new building on Main Street in 1988 by transforming an urban department store into a sleek and airy, light-filled space with 25 galleries.

Historic Columbia Foundation: Historic Columbia is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Columbia and Richland County’s historic and cultural heritage.  Well-known for managing several local historic properties as historic house museums, the HCF also offers house & garden tours, walking tours, and self-guided tours.  Click the link above for more information!

Soda City Market: This market is held on Main Street each and every Saturday morning and features crafts, produce, and food–both prepared and fresh from the farm!

The Vista: The Breakdown

The Vista is eclectic entertainment district within walking distance of Columbia’s Main Street, the SC Statehouse, and the University of South Carolina.  If you find yourself near campus craving pizza, the Thirsty Fellow (near the Colonial Life Arena) has some of the best in town with a nice covered patio to enjoy the SC May weather with an ice cold libation.  For a ballgame, chicken wings, and some great raw fries, check out the Wild Hare Sports Cafe.  If seafood is more your style, Pearlz Oyster Bar offers oysters on the half shell and other regional & lowcountry favorites in an eclectic, cool atmosphere.  A quick snack (their soft pretzels are AMAZING) and craft beer at The Flying Saucer will tide you over after an afternoon of perusing nearby shops. For live music later in the evening, Tin Roof is the place to be to shake your groove thing!

Five Points: The Lowdown

Five Points is a shopping, nightlife, and restaurant district that attracts both the University of South Carolina College crowd and the surrounding Rosewood & Shandon residents.  Feel free to walk around for a couple of hours and grab some lunch at Yesterday’s, a 5 Points country-cooking mainstay that will knock your socks off.  If a sandwich is more your style, you should check out Groucho’s Deli for their delicious sauce or DiPrato’s, a New York Style deli that has a fabulous pimento cheese.  Cantina 76 offers great Mexican tacos with a southern twist. You should wash down their Peruvian Shrimp Tacos with Columbia’s BEST Margarita.
Things to do: Local Church Edition

The Downtown Church (When we are both in Columbia for a weekend we both really enjoy this church!)

THE BASICS

Sunday worship at Downtown Church is an interactive service – get a refill of coffee, walk the baby if she gets fussy, speak to your neighbor if you like the music. We don’t mind. The music will be familiar and surprising. You will meet new people. And you will encounter God. Come early, stay late, and please don’t dress up for us.
